Habitat for Humanity Makes a Real Difference in Peoples Lives

No matter who we are or where we come from, we all desire a decent life and a feeling of stability. We deserve to know that we have the power to take care of ourselves and build our future.

At Habitat for Humanity Ozaukee, through shelter, we empower families. Our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Habitat for Humanity's work in Ozaukee County is guided by our mission statement: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity Ozaukee brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable no interest mortgage. With our help, homeowners attain strength, stability and independence that they need to build a better life for themselves and their families.

Through our Home Preservation program (formerly known as A Brush with Kindness) homeowners are helped with basic repairs or modifications for handicap accessibility/aging in place.

According to the 2020 ALICE report by the United Way, Ozaukee has 20% of its population living at ALICE levels. (ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county). The need is indeed real here in Ozaukee County and HFHOZ is working to impact the lives of those who fall into this group.

James, one of our newest homeowners shared, "It’s a very humbling experience, just to know that strangers would dedicate their time and energy for someone they’ve never met before to come together to accomplish a common goal in the rain, cold and heat to help us, build our home. These are great people, wonderful people."

When asked about what it means for their family to have a place to call their own, Brigette said, "It means legacy and finally putting down roots. One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a home they can truly call their own. This exceeds any prayer I could have prayed and any dream I could have dreamed."

James had this to say about what he will take away from this experience, "the meaningful relationships that we have built with the volunteers and the board members, along with learning how to use tools and to build. This process prepared me to be able to make sure that my family has a safe home for years to come." Bridgette said, "The relationships with all those we’ve worked with on the jobsite, and on the board, they have become part of our extended family. I also will never forget that in a world that looks so grim at times, there are truly some amazing, wonderful people in it as well."
